How is everyone doing right now? I do hope that you are all looking after yourself and keeping healthy, as we continue this lockdown protocol in the wake of the global pandemic. I am very fortunate to have a family friend as my physician and the amazing Dr Paul M Willette MD has been keeping in regular contact with us during this time, and even scolded me for being lazy. I was actually pleased that he brought this up because it was true, I had spent that first month of lockdown being far too lazy and I am so glad that Paul got in touch and gave me some home truths. If you find yourself being lazier than normal, here is why you need to get up and get moving.
Blood Flow
Something which many office workers suffer from is poor blood flow in their legs and that is because of the amount of time that they are sedentary. The body has to keep moving in order to get the blood circulating around the system and the more time that you re laying down or sitting down, the poorer the body can do that. Get up and get moving, and get that blood pumping around the body to where it is most needed.
Gaining Weight
A big danger which we are all facing is gaining weight during lockdown, a very real concern. There are 2 key reasons why this could happen, the first is the level of comfort that you feel at home and there is a higher temptation than ever to snack and eat junk food. The second reason why we are in danger of losing weight is because we are not moving around like we usually do and that means there are many calories which we would have burned before, without even realizing, that we are now not burning. Now if you add to this the fat that you may be sat around doing nothing for long periods of time, we can see that there is in fact a very real risk of you gaining weight, which of course brings with it a wide number of risks.
Mindset
Something which Paul spoke to me about and he was absolutely right is the change in mindset that we have when we get lazy. Whist I went from being incredibly mobile to being very lazy with ease, going back the other way is far more challenging. Sooner or later this pandemic will be over and there is a very real concern that lazy attitudes and behaviors will continue, which is not going to be a good thing.
If you have become lazy then don’t worry, it happens and this is a tough time so you can excuse yourself, you will have to make sure however that you try and change your ways quickly, before you pose any risks to your health and wellbeing.
