What You Can Do to Keep Your Warehouse Employees Safe

June 30, 2022

Everyone deserves to be safe when they are going about their daily work, but some workplaces can come with higher risks than others. This is why all businesses must make health and safety a priority, following the correct protocols for the kind of working environment their employees are in and carrying out regular checks to make sure these rules are being followed.

With this in mind, if you are an employer who has staff working in a warehouse environment, below are some tips to help you keep your team safe.

Make Sure All Staff are Trained

When you are welcoming new employees to the team, you will need to ensure that training them on your company’s health and safety regulations is a key part of their induction. You may want to give them your breakdown of these procedures and have them take a written test to ensure that this information is being taken in.

If part of their work requires them to operate machinery in the warehouse, they will also need to take the correct training to use that equipment safely. Additionally, refresher courses should also be held regularly for more established employees.

Signpost Hazards

You should also make sure that any potential hazards in the warehouse are signposted to make all employees aware of any dangers. You can signpost hazards with stickers or by painting warnings or clearly marking out dangerous areas on the warehouse floor and walls.

Also, if there are areas that only certain employees should be in, make it clear that these areas have restricted access and give staff with that access fob keys or passcodes that they can use to enter.

PPE Gear

Providing your warehouse employees with the right PPE attire to wear on the floor is also an essential part of keeping them safe. Wearing high-vis jackets can make sure that your staff can be seen when working inside and outside of the warehouse. You might want them to wear hardhats in certain areas, too, in case of boxes or other items falling from shelves. You can read more about warehouse PPE here.

Reinforcing Shelves

Your warehouse teams must be trained on how to store items on the warehouse shelves safely, as well as how to remove these items in the right way. However, no matter how sensibly your staff stack and remove items from shelves, there can still be a risk of accident and injury.

You can take steps to reinforce the shelves in your warehouse and take additional measures to make them safer, such as protecting your warehouse racking and getting experts to help you install these units properly.

Warehouse Security

Keeping the warehouse security systems updated is an important step in keeping your products and equipment safe, as well as your employees. Having security cameras installed, limited access to the site, and secure doors and alarms can stop unwanted visitors from turning up in the warehouse, reducing potential threats to your staff and your place of business.

If you want to make sure that you’re keeping your warehouse employees safe, use these tips as a starting point to help improve safety in your workplace.
