It can be so frustrating when your garage door doesn’t want to open. Sometimes it will only open halfway and take the last shred of patience you had for the day. However, most garage door opener problems can be easy to fix if you know what to look out for. The first thing to do is always consult the owner’s manual to identify the problem, but what if you cannot find an answer? You will be surprised how common this issue is, and here are three reasons you may be overlooking it.
Faulty Circuit Breaker
A sign of a faulty breaker or fuse is when neither remote nor internal wall controls can open the garage door. It’s a classic sign that either there is not enough power to the motor, or that it has been switched off. First off, unplug everything. Reset the circuit breaker and look for any burned-out or broken fuses. If nothing seems out of place, plug the motor back in.
This kind of problem can occur if there is a shortage in your electrical system or if any water got into the circuit board. If a faulty circuit breaker or fuse is the cause of the problem, then it’s an easy fix to do yourself. If the issue persists even after you have replaced the fuses, then your garage door opener may be the problem.
Limit Switches Need to Be Adjusted
For safety reasons, all garage doors are installed with set-limit switches. They work with the motor to indicate when the gate can close or open safely. If something is in the way, the door should stop moving. Sometimes these limit switches will malfunction, which means that it poses a security risk if it’s not fixed.
Sensors are placed on either side of the garage door, and if they pick up any movement, the electronic eye will tell the motor to stop running. If at any point those electronic eyes break, you will need to call a professional such as A1 Garage Doors to have new ones fitted. A1 Garage Doors can service, repair, or install any garage door of your choosing. If you need repair services, A1 Garage Doors will provide you with a quotation at no extra charge.
Antenna Isn’t Reachable
Garage door remotes work at a frequency of 315mH. If you are too far away from the garage door, the sensor may not register that the button has been pushed. Even an extra metre in the wrong direction will affect the signal, and the door won’t open at all.
The antenna also needs to be facing straight up at all times to get the best range of the signal. Make sure that your antenna isn’t facing downward or damaged in any way. Another reason is that the electronic remote may lose its programming in the process of communicating with the antenna. If this happens, it just needs to be reprogrammed.
Garage doors that won’t open are a very common issue, but they can be simple to fix if you know where the problem is coming from. Remember these factors any time your garage door won’t open, and you may be able to fix it in just a few minutes.
