4 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Boat Propeller

May 19, 2022

Is summer your favorite time of year?

If so, you’re not alone. That’s because the heat of the summer months is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the sun and fun of your favorite outdoor activities.

When it comes to the most popular ways to make the most of every moment of summer fun, it’s hard to beat spending hours on the water in a boat. The key is to make sure that your boat is in proper running condition. This means keeping it safe and seaworthy.

Here we take a look at signs that you might need to replace your boat propeller. Keep reading to learn more.

1. Visible Damage

When it comes to knowing you should invest in a new propeller, the most obvious sign is visible damage. This includes noticeable warping, dents, nicks, cracks, corrosion on the blades, severely worn blades, and a clogged prop hub.

Anytime you notice a damaged boat propeller, you should never ignore the problem. The key is to replace it as soon as possible before the damage gets worse and creates an emergency out on the water.

2. It’s Not the Right Size for Your Boat Motor

It’s important to keep in mind that not every size prop is right for every motor. In fact, every boat motor requires a specific size to operate safely and efficiently.

Some of the signs that you have the wrong size prop include lack of speed in the water, the engine over-revs, or the engine is burning too much fuel

3. Too Much Prop Pitch

Prop pitch refers to the distance your propeller must turn to complete one full revolution in the water.

For example, if your prop has a pitch of 20 inches, it should turn 20 inches every time it completes a full rotation through a solid medium. The problem with too much pitch is that your boat might have trouble accelerating. This is like accelerating in your car from a dead stop with your car in 3rd gear. The engine might rev, but you’re not going anywhere fast.

When you’re ready to improve the performance of your boat motor, be sure to look here for Michagan propellers.

4. Cheap Material

When a boat prop is made of aluminum, it’s probably not going to last long with frequent use. That’s because aluminum isn’t durable enough to handle the workload. Thus you need to invest in a new boat propeller made of stainless steel if you intend to use your boat regularly.
