How to Choose the Right Pet for You & Your Family

November 8, 2021

Pets are a joy to have, and for most people, they quickly become more than a pet; they become a member of the family – as they should. Now, when it comes to choosing a pet, it can be a little overwhelming because each species will have different care requirements. However, there are a lot of different factors that come into play that can help you to make a choice.

Questions to Ask Yourself

First things first, before you can start looking for pets, you need to ask yourself some questions first. First, how often are you home? Some animals need more attention than others, so if your home is empty a lot, this can limit your options. Second, do you or anyone in your household have any allergies? This will obviously need to be taken into account. Finally, what level of care are you prepared to commit to? Each type of pet will require different levels of care, some more time consuming than others.

Choosing a Pet: Dogs

You first need to have an idea of what breed you want, and you should do your research to learn more about the breed. Size is important, too; a bigger dog will need more room and food than a smaller dog. They all need walking, and this is where your choice of dog collars and leashes comes in; some dogs do great on walks, whereas others need training, and the leash that you use can have a big impact on their behavior on walks. Monro Pets have a huge range of unique dog collars and leashes to choose from if you do decide to opt for a canine friend.

Choosing a Pet: Cats

Cats are fairly low maintenance; they can be left to themselves for long periods of time, but they are also affectionate and happy to be handled too for the most part. Cats will need a litterbox and toys to keep them entertained, and they do also have a tendency towards scratching. If you are leaning towards a cat, then you should research the breeds first; some breeds are more affectionate and some more aloof.

Choosing a Pet: Birds

There are a lot of different birds to choose from; budgies, cockatiels, and parrots are all popular choices. Some birds like being handled, and some can be trained to talk or perform tricks. Of course, the cage needs to be kept clean, and birds need some things to keep them stimulated in their cage too. The cleaning can be a lot, but other than that, birds are relatively low maintenance pets.

Choosing a Pet: Rabbits, Hamsters & Guinea Pigs

These animals are great for children. They all require some sort of hutch, cage or run, which will need cleaning. They can all be handled, and for the most part, they can be affectionate pets too. Like most pets, they will need some toys and tunnels to stimulate their minds. They are all relatively low maintenance options – aside from the cage cleaning.

To Conclude

There are a lot of different options when it comes to getting a pet for your family. As well as considering your needs and preferences, you need to think about the animal too. It has to be a good match on both sides.
